So What Precisely Is The Point Of Karate Weapons?

By Christina J. Shadrick

It wasn't until late last century that most Westerners found out that karate weapons actually existed, and it was at that point that a big misconception about the various styles of martial arts was replaced with an even deeper fascination with the sport. While martial arts is still very much a style of fighting based on utilizing the body as your primary weapon, staffs and blades and other tools have their place and serve their purpose, as misunderstood as it might be.

Though these instruments of martial combat have been around for centuries, a lot of martial artists will say that their place in actual combat is strange. However, much of martial arts is about disciplining and training your body to develop into an efficient fighting machine, which calls for an abundance of speed and agility and sharp reflexes. People may not see it just by glancing at them, but the odd and ancient weapons that you see take a good deal of skill and maneuvering to master, which can work wonders for developing the kind of body and maneuverability that all great fighters are working towards.

When you see some of these peculiar looking things, you will most likely scratch your head while trying to figure out who made such a thing in the first place. The short answer is that these instruments were created from ancient farming tools to deadly weapons by farmers who didn't have access to the swords and other things that were used by the imperial forces of that era.

They were not invented by ancient martial arts heroes who desired new tools to perfect their fighting style; they were just tools that were modified by farmers who needed something to defend their selves with. Even though these tools were change so that they would be effective for combat, they were still used for their normal farming functions, which helped disguise their existence from attackers who thought the farmers were unarmed. A lot of these folks were used to being attacked frequently, and after they honed their skills with these tools, they could finally defend their selves.

At present, these karate weapons are basically just for practicing and for appearances, so you will probably only see them during training or in martial arts movies. In spite of what people think, these old farming tools still serve their purpose and are also a lot of fun to watch.
