Kyokushinkai is a Japanese word meaning "the society of ultimate truth", (Kyoku = ultimate, Shin = reality or truth and Kai = society or association), as well as the Kyokushinkai type of karate is the biggest on the planet today.

How Kyokushinkai All started

Kyokushinkai was founded by Master Mas Oyama, who studied lots of kinds of martial arts and at last created his own karate technique. It was intended becoming a stand-up full contact type of karate, utilising strong strength and an efficient fighting technique. The motto of kyokushinkai is "One shot, one victory". It emphasises self-progress, tricky preparation and perhaps discipline. There are over twelve million practitioners of this way of karate from the time when it had been created.

Kyokushinkai started in 1964 after Oyama spent years of preparation and refining his own style. Oyama grew up in China where he first educated Shaolin techniques. He moved to Japan in 1938 and studied Okinawan Karate, lastly reaching 2nd Dan on this form. Soon, after World War II he trained in Goju Ryu Karate, and attained 8th Dan. Oyama also took up other types of martial arts, plus judo by which he achieved a 4th Dan. After this point, Oyama retreated on the mountains for lone preparation. He finally undertook two such retreats, totalling approximately 3 years where he spent many hours each day in focussed training and self-teaching.

In 1953 Oyama opened his own dojo in Tokyo, and during now travelled extensively around Japan and other countries as well as the United States. He developed his own curriculum which had a status as a tough, practical style of rigid hitting and realistic karate. The reputation of the dojo grew, and students rapidly started coming from across Japan and further afield to coach with Oyama. Finally in 1964 he moved his dojo into a refurbished building, and formally founded the "International Karate Organization Kyojushinkaikan", and was thus capable to organize the many schools which by then trained kyokushinkai.

Kuyokushinkai In the present day

As soon as Oyama died in 1994, it has certain separation among the various Kyokushinkai communities. The principle grounds for this were conflicts between those folks who believed they should succeed Oyama, as Oyama named no successor before his death. Each among the shatter groups of Kyokushinkai demand to represent the first organisation, but you will find variations between many these organisations and the first founded by Oyama.

Yet, at the moment you will find still kyokushinkai karate schools offering likewise quality tutoring that was originally started by Mas Oyama over 40 in the past, and millions still take pleasure in his disciplined nature and focussed fighting style.
